RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING PROCEDURE

CREDIT TRANSFER

Credit transfer is a process which allows students to seek recognition for prior studies they may have undertaken. Many of the individual units in the various Health qualifications are the same, thus a student can directly transfer the units completed in another qualification to VCHE courses.

Example:
Kathy has completed an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy from the Health Training Package at another institution. Kathy wants to enrol in the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy and the Diploma of Remedial Massage. On her Naturopathy Statement of Attainment is a list of all the units she has successfully completed as part of her Advanced Diploma.

Many of the units successfully completed by Kathy are also part of the Massage courses offered by VCHE. Kathy makes a time to see VCHE staff and is able to directly credit transfer her completed units from Naturopathy to a VCHE course.

There is no cost for a Credit Transfer.

To apply for a credit transfer, contact the College to make an appointment. You will need to bring your original Statement of Attainment from any previous course (or courses). You will know that you have completed a course from the Health Training Package by your course being a “HLT” coded course (either 02 or 07).

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the individual's non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards for entry to units of a VCHE course. This can be prior training (such as a University course or a First Aid Certificate), work experience (for instance, if you work in retail you will have customer experience), or other experience (such as being on committees or being a representative of other people).

Example 1:
John has a Degree in Human Movement from a University. He can use his Anatomy, Physiology and Human Movement knowledge to apply for an RPL – he has already completed these components and will not have to do them as part of doing the Fitness course.

Example 2:
Alison works at Safeway. As a shift supervisor for two years, she has experience in dealing with customers, dealing with complaints, and Occupational Health and Safety. Alison has also been on the daughter’s Kindergarten Committee. She can apply for RPL’s to recognise her work experience against what is taught as part of the Massage course.

There is a $100.00 fee for the RPL process, which is then refunded when a student enrols in a VCHE course. Alternatively, a student can enrol in a VCHE course and then apply for as many RPL processes as they wish for no cost.

To apply for a RPL, contact the College to make an appointment. You are advised to bring as much information as possible. Some suggestions are:

  • A current CV / resume, which includes an overview of your job skills;
  • Any current or past job descriptions;
  • Any original Certificates / Statements of Attainment from previous courses;
  • Course outlines, or completed assessment tasks that give an overview of your studies (eg essays, assignments, practicals);
  • Letters of reference from previous / past employers.
